Unity Through Knowledge
The Problem
Recent assessments reveal that more than 70% of Americans fail basic civic literacy tests, with only 23% of eighth-graders performing at or above proficient levels on national civics examinations—a stagnation that has persisted for over two decades. This knowledge deficit extends beyond mere test scores: 70% of high school seniors report never writing a letter to address a community issue, and 30% have never participated in a debate, indicating a fundamental disconnect from the participatory skills essential for democratic citizenship. The systematic reduction of social studies instructional time across 44% of school districts has created what experts term a "civic desert," where students graduate without understanding the three branches of government, the functions of democratic institutions, or the critical thinking skills necessary to evaluate information in our digital age. As social studies supervisors and instructional leaders, we face the urgent challenge of reversing this trend through innovative curricula, professional development, and advocacy that restores the social sciences to their rightful place as the foundation of civic education and democratic participation. NASSS strives to create meaningful platforms for students to develop and demonstrate their social sciences knowledge while building essential civic skills.
